Problem of Fake Marriages
We believe that the problem could only be fixed by investment in the number of officers who are able to conduct interviews routinely and if necessary conduct field investigations.
Some have suggested that we impose a waiting period during which the Sponsor can withdraw the sponsorship. This opens the door to potential abuse by abusive Sponsors who will be telling the Sponsored person that if you do not do this or that, I will withdraw the sponsorship.
On the other hand, we see many Sponsors who have been taken advantage of simply because they believed in true love. In our experience, the phrase "love is blind" is most aptly applied here. Field investigations and mandatory interviews are the answer to the nightmare that these, so to speak, blind sponsors, may or will face.
In short, be wise, open your eyes and listen to your elders. If it is too good to be true, it likely is. Common sense has served us for centuries. Why should we abandon it now? When a 20 year old claims to be in love with a 60 year old partner, common sense and our gut instinct tells us "something is fishy; dont fall for it".
