SKILLED WORKERS CLASS
Skilled workers are persons whose skills and qualifications are measured under a system commonly referred to as the “point system”. Particularly suitable for immigration as Silled Workers are applicants who have high education and/or substantial work experience that can be later utilized in the Canadian labour market. Hence, the Point System for qualifying as a skilled worker is primarily based on “education”, “work experience”, age and language abilities which are particularly useful to establishment in the Canadian economy. The system is designed to measure the likelihood that such skilled workers may succeed in being economically established in Canada and adapting to the Canadian society.
To qualify, as it currently stands, skilled workers must obtain a minimum of 67 points. It must be noted that the minimum required number of points is subject to regulatory change by the responsible Minister.
As a minimum, skilled workers must first be able to show that they have a minimum of one year continuous full-time or full-time equivalent work experience. If the skilled worker successfully meets the definition, s/he is then assessed against five selection factors, namely: age, education, official languages, work experience and adaptability: the skilled worker will then be given a maximum of 25 points for his/her educational credentials, 24 points for language abilities, 21 points for work experience, 10 points for age, 10 points for arranged employment and 10 points for adaptability.
Under the new system, Skilled Workers whose qualifications are in demand are given priority processing and the average processing time for skilled worker applications is about 8-12 months.
